Travel to Den Hoorn, Texel. Kliffhanger 2011. This film takes two and a half hours: the duration of the journey from my home in Castricum to den Hoorn, Texel. The idea at Klifhanger, a biennial art event in den Hoorn, is for the artist to create work that has a connection to the place where it will be exhibited. I made a sound recording of the trip; I took it as the basis for my paintings and the film you can see here. I took the shot on a day in January; as a result, the walk on Texel was especially quiet! (...how do I paint silence?) It was new to me and very interesting to use sound as a source for my paintings. The sounds immediately bring associations: I feel the train, the long sitting, the going somewhere; I feel the rush on the boat, the atmosphere; I feel the space and vastness of the Texel landscape. That, too, ended up in my paintings. What you see on the film is mainly the slowness of painting; the technique of painting layer upon layer, the construction of the paintings and the differences in dynamics. What I can't show is how ideas arise in my head, how I spend times sitting or standing in front of a canvas watching and waiting.... I mainly show actions. I wish you much viewing pleasure.
